Because of its historical/cultural connotations the famous novel collection of Arabian Nights was able to act as the ideal bridge between the Arab and Indo/Persian world, with which the journey of “On the Way to New Cultures” continues.
This evening was realized by Marco Bernardi, producer and director of Teatro Stabile Bolzano, and by Younis Tawfik, university teacher of Arabic Language and Literature and also well-known journalist and writer, born in Iraq and today living in Italy, since 1979.
Tawfik started with “The Bride of Brides”, translated by himself into Italian. It is an intriguing narration that dates back to the 13 th century and with its themes and atmospheres paves the way for the “Arabian Nights”.
Common features of the two collections is the oral quality: they were stories told before they became read texts. And so the voice of Tawfik was intertwined with the narrating voices of Paolo Bonacelli and Patrizia Milani to re-create the magic and the enchantment of the spoken word and with that the atmosphere of narration peculiar to the “Arabian Nights”.
A modern interpretation by Tawfik, “The Last Night of Shahrazad”, a tribute to the ‘weaver’ of the tales, ended this journey through the oriental imagination.
